Walmart Neighborhood Market opening on Independence Blvd.

To contact us Click HERE

A Walmart Neighborhood Market is opening next year on Independence Boulevard, the first store of its kind in Charlotte.

As previously reported on this blog, the store will be in a former Best Buy location at 7421 E. Independence Boulevard, in the Independence Square shopping center. That shopping center also has a Super Global Mart international food store.

The store will be hiring about 85 people to work full and part-time. They'll start working in January as the store prepares for its opening.

There are some 200 Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets nationwide. They're about the same size as traditional supermarkets, and carry similar lines of goods. This is the state's second Neighborhood Market. The first opened in Cary in October. Here's a local news story from Cary with pictures of the store, to give you a better idea what to expect (Their verdict: "Walmart Neighborhood Market looks like a lot like a slightly less fancy Harris Teeter.").

“We are excited to add this Walmart Neighborhood Market to Charlotte and bring good jobs with career opportunities to the area,” said store manager David Thomas, in a statement. He's been with the company for three years, and started his career in Shelby.

The new Neighborhood Market will be a challenge to other supermarkets, of course, and also to other smaller,  discount food retailers, such as Family Dollar. It represents the fourth new grocery option in the region announced or opened this year, along with Whole Foods, 201central, and Publix.

Building permits show Walmart is spending more than $3.5 million to upgrade some 50,000 square feet of the building.

Here's Walmart's description of the Neighborhood Markets: "Walmart Neighborhood Markets were designed in 1998 as a smaller-footprint option for communities in need of a pharmacy, affordable groceries and merchandise. There are now about 200 Neighborhood Markets in the U.S. Each one is approximately 38,000 square feet and employs about 95 associates. Walmart Neighborhood Markets offer fresh produce, meat and dairy products, bakery and deli items, household supplies, health and beauty aids and a pharmacy."

A new Highway 55 Burgers, Shakes, & Fries is opening in north Charlotte, the adding another local store for the eastern North Carolina company.

The new store opening is on Davis Lake Parkway, and will open Dec. 27. Father and son team Greg Hinson, 55, and his 27-year-old son Brad, 27, are opening the franchised store, their first. Highway 55 is also opening a new location soon in Gastonia's Franklin Square, though no exact date has been set.

Former general manager David Luckey said the restaurant's last day of business was Sunday. The closure is permanent, he confirmed.

He said the general economic conditions had caused Vinnie's to struggle. "This economy makes everybody broke," said Luckey, who was helping to clean out the restaurant Thursday afternoon.

There are no plans to close the second Vinnie's location in Mooresville, which remains open, Luckey said.

Post Proposes DC Annex Columbia

To contact us Click HERE

In a parting gesture to the citizens of the District of Columbia, retiring Senator Joseph Leiberman has introduced a bill in the Senate to makeDC our 51st state called New Columbia. The bill would redraw theexisting boundaries of the city by carving out The Mall, most federalgovernment buildings and monuments from the proposed state.
Today, in the Style section of The Washington Post, MonicaHesse and Dan Zak have shared their own thoughts for redrawing the capital city’slines. Number one on their list was making our Columbiapart of their Columbia.
  1. To eliminate confusion, the town of Columbia, Md., shall become part of New Columbia but be known as Old Columbia.

In case you might mistake this for anything other thansatire, consider that one of their other suggestions was to make Georgetown part of Connecticut.
Still, it’s always nice to be number one.

Parking App Gap

To contact us Click HERE

During this years Midnight Madness celebration in Ellicott City, I gave the new “smart” parking system atest run.
It failed.
In fairness at least part of the blame could be user errorbased on my lack of familiarity with the system. The main problem however, waspointed out in this story by Randall Stross in The New York Times.
“Smart-parking apps aren't as useful as might be expectedfor drivers seeking open spots. When a parking space is vacated, there is ashort delay before a sensor’s signal moves through the wireless network, reaches the centralized system and finally arrives on a driver’s phone. But ifother cars are circling, even a 30-second or one-minute wait can be too long.”
That would seem to be particularly true during a period of highdemand such as Midnight Madness. After our initial failure to harness the apps power to locate an open space, we simply headed upthe hill to Parking Lot F by the Court House where we found plenty of avilable spaces.Even after the new pay system becomes operational on January 1st,the spaces in this parking lot will remain free.

Max’s Redneck Christmas

To contact us Click HERE

A couple weeks ago, driving through Catonsvilleon my way home, I spotted a house at the corner of Ridge Road and Rolling Road that had almost every squareinch of yard covered with inflatable holiday stuff. It was so over the top itmade me laugh out loud.
Today I took Peanut by to show her and we met the homeowner. “Icall it Max’s Redneck Christmas,” he told us.
Max had just finished adding yet another inflatable holidaydog to the mix. “I picked it yesterday. It was marked down,” he explained.
He told us that he actually has five more that he stillneeds to put up.
“I put one at the front door because people kept knocking onmy door to ask if they could take pictures.”
No need to ring the bell. Max doesn't care if you takepictures.

So Long Sarah

To contact us Click HERE

One of the benefits of writing a loco blog is meeting other writers with an interest in loco issues. That was certainly true almost three years ago when I met Sarah Hussain.Sarah was the new girl in a local blogosphere dominated by men and, being a writer, she wrote about that too.
I immediately liked her.
I wasn't alone either. In very short period of time, Sarah cast a wide net because she didn't just write about stuff from a bystander’sperspective. She jumped into the loco scene with both feet, serving on the HoCoGeneral Plan Task Force and the Owen Brown Village Master Plan Committee. Shealso joined the HoCo League of Women Voters and together with her husbandChris, created a series of You Tube videos on the candidates for the schoolboard for the league.
In her own corner of Columbiashe also organized a block party and was one of the first town home owners toparticipate in the Columbia Association rain garden program.
In other words, Sarah and Chris were the kind of neighborsthat make great neighborhoods even better.
She even helped changed some loco perceptions of bloggerswhen she participated in the wine summit with Doug Miller from Explore Howard.
Now they are leaving. As Sarah explains Chris got a “greatjob offer in Californiaand we are moving at the end of the month. We've liked our time here, and wehope to be back. But for now, it's goodbye East Coast,Maryland, and Howard County.”
The left coasts' gain is the east coasts loss.

It’s Dookie Time

To contact us Click HERE

Once again it is time to open up a can of sarcasm on theHoCo loco world of blogging with the sixth annual Dookie awards. The Dookies, named after Hayduke not the other thing, are a time to plant tongues firmly incheeks and have a little fun with our blogging brethren and blog readers. So,without further diddling and unnecessary verbosity, I hereby open the 2012 Dookie nominations.
Baltimoremay have Dan Rodricks but in HoCo blogging we have Tom Coale. Almost everymorning, the HoCo Rising blog greets us with deep navel gazing on societies ills. In return, his loyal stable of commenter’s waste no time in pointing outwhat he gets wrong. For his efforts to educate the electorate, we nominate HoCoRising for the Rodricks Rant Dookie.
The Royal Dookie Academyrecognizes the symbiotic relationship of Twitter and blogs and no one has donemore to tweet HoCo loco blogs than Jesse Newburn. In her zeal to tie the twomedia platforms even tighter together Jesse has developed list of loco hashtagsa mile long covering every possible subject from HoCoMartnis to HoCoNature.Count us among those that find this proliferation of #hoco’s to resemble a plate of corned beef hash, a little of everything, but very little meat. For that reason we nominateJesse for the Corned Beef Hash Dookie. We'd write a tweet about this but we're afraid the hashtags alone would use up all 140 characters.
Expanding beyond the simple written word, Bill Woodcock hasadded video to his HoCo blogging repertoire. In his initial installments we seeBill peering down at us while sitting in what appears to be his living room complete with a cracked mirror and a disabled smoke alarm in the background. Bill is soclose to the camera that you can almost see his nasal hairs. That’s too closefor us and brings to mind the Seinfeld episode with the close talker. TheDookie academy nominates Bill Woodcock for the Close Talker Dookie.
Nobody likes school redistricting. No matter where the linesare drawn, there is bound to be a group of people who cry foul. Taking sides andcalling out those who manufacture facts is a no win situation but this did not deterLisa Schlossnagle. In her blog, Lisa B, Mrs. S, Lisa wrote 15 posts coveringevery aspect of this touchy subject. We haven’t seen coverage this deep ona single loco hot topic since Frank Hecker scrutinized councilmantic redistricting last year. Scholarly work such as this warrants recognition so we nominateLisa B., Mrs. S for the Frank Hecker Dissertation Dookie.
And finally, let us recognize those who comment on blogs.Comments make blogs more interesting and sometimes downright fun like whencertain elected officials jump in. This year there were several standouts includingthe self proclaimed avenger of statists, Bill Bissenas. After much debate andseveral beers, the academy felt that this years honor for best blog commentershould go to Chris Oxenham. We choose to honor Chris with the nomination for theChattering Class Dookie this year because he recently became engaged and wesuspect marriage may soon mellow out his vitriol.

As always, remember that Dookie nominations are open to all.If you have someone in the HoCo blogosphere that you feel has earned a Dookieof your own construct, please jump in.

Summer's No Fun When Your AC Unit Dies..

To contact us Click HERE
..Summers. Normally they can be enjoyable; time in the sprinkler or pool, warm weather, lots of outdoor fun with the kids, a tall glass of iced tea. No, not this summer. It's been the hottest summer in Fayetteville, since I can remember. It's so hot, we've spend many a day inside cooling off and letting the 105+ humid days roll by, praying for a nice long fall to not skip us again this year.

And then, one day, as luck would have it, I am sitting in the den when my breaker box starts making an on and off buzzing or humming noise, the lights begin to flicker and I am like "great, we have an electrical issue, wonder how costly this is going to be".

After isolating it to the breaker controlling the air conditioning unit, we replace the breaker switch, just to learn it wasn't the problem. So instead, to avoid a risk of a possible fire (I guess, I don't know it didn't sound too nice, don't want to take my chances), we turn the a/c off and wait until morning.

So, at this point, I am not sure who to call. The A/C is running fine, but the breaker box wants to sound like it's going to burst when it's on. Do I call an HVAC tech or do I call an electrician? hmmm, I think a while..

I call a random electrician here in Fayetteville, I explain my problem, tell him I replaced the breaker switch, tell him it's ONLY when the a/c comes on and the lights flicker the box makes a loud noise. I ask, "honestly, do you think this is an electrical issue or an hvac issue". He tells me, "it's electrical". I ask what is fee to diagnose the problem is, he tells me "$75 service fee and then $69 an hour to fix it". I tell him "okay, come on by".

He shows up, he and his assistant turn my oven burners on the highest heat setting EVER, leave them on and my smoke alarm goes off and my house smells like death. After a while he turns it off, does more testing with a meter at the breaker box then says, "let me try the a/c" - which is what i told him it was to begin with mind you!  After that he says, "it's your ac" I say, "I know, so is it something on your end you can fix"? He says, "no you'll need an hvac tech". okaaaaay?? Did I not just ask him this? Did he just waste 20 minutes to test my oven which isn't even on the same circuit as my a/c to tell me what I told him on the phone?

So I feel kind of "duped" and when I am ready to pay I am expecting to pay the $75 service charge. Only he  tells me $95!? I mean, I am all for paying the $75 because he came out, but why am I being charge $20 for 20 minutes?! NOTHING was fixed! There was no electrical issue, $20 is a lot to me. Anyway I don't say anything and pay it, but I can't help but feel totally blind sided and taken advantage of. I semi want to tell the world who the company was, but am hesitant. AND the kicker?! He has me make a personal check out TO HIM, not the COMPANY? He must be the owner..but very shoddy, to take advantage of apotential client and know the problem isn't electrical but weazle your way in to get 95 bucks..YOU'RE WELCOME sheister!! But do know you won't get reference in the market I work in :)) Bad call for you!

Moving along, we called our usual a/c guy, who will come today to diagnose it, which is a $65 service charge..part of me thinks it is going to be a pricey part, and the unit is old, I pray he can fix it for the time being, but I feel it is going to need a new unit.

I have no idea what a new unit will run for a just under 1300 sq. ft.  home with existing duct work. I'm sure it's 3k+ and to be honest that exhausts both my savings and credit line.

(SIGH)..ooooh a/c, why couldn't you wait to take your final sputters towards fall. Why during the hottest summer in God's Green earth when times are already tight must you decide it's time to commit suicide.

If by chance an hvac tech happens upon this post and lives in my area, and wants to qoute me for a new unit, I'd be more than happy to consider it.

As it stands, I have a migraine, I want to cry and my luck just comes in the worst assortment.

THANK GOD I have been doing well with couponing..or else I'd really barely get by. Well, so much for budget remodels, more issues have suddenly sucked me dry of money.

It really is, waaaaaaaaaaay to hot for the a/c to be down :((

I don't often post photos of my children much anymore. Much to my dismay, my website has been mirrored and copied a few times (not sure why, it's not even one of the very top sites on the web). But needless to say, it still peeves me a bit. - Not to mention having to file copy right complaints - which tend to be tricky when the creepy person stealing your information has a .ca domain :( Shame on you! - You really should be ashamed of yourself for taking my work and copying my entire website. The things I do are special to me, and it's a shame you take credit for them.

So as a result, I have decided to be persistent with water marking my images. (which I hate) :(

Anyway, here are a few photos of my children that I took with the new studio lighting. I must say, it makes a difference :)) I will, however, purchase some higher wattage bulbs for my umbrella lights!

We have been enjoying the fall (even though some days the temperature still gets hot and humid).

So far this October, the kids have visited a local (very busy) pumpkin patch, picked pumpkins at a local farmer's market and went on to harvest the pecans and grapes from our backyard. - I am hoping to plant pumpkin seeds next so that next year we will have our very own mini pumpkin patch :) Can you imagine the fun that would be??
(Below: Ethan showing off the grapes and pecans he picked in the backyard today.)
(Below: MiMi showing off one of her pecans from the yard)(Below: Just an image of a grape cluster growing the the back yard.)
As some of my readers know, I have a slight Gymboree obsession, however, I will only shop with sales or gymbucks for the most part.  Over the summer and during the last huge online sale they had, I gradually built up this collection and decided it would be perfect for MiMi's school photos. What do y'all think??
(Below: A whole lot of cherry!! Gymboree's cherry line makes for a great back to school girl's outfit!)
What else is new as far as the house is concerned? Well, little progress. Still waiting to complete the den flooring - I guess as time and money allows, but right now with the holidays fast approaching and being on a budget, it looks like the den will have to wait. It's come a long way, baby, with a lot of time and love - why not a little longer? ;) - It will happen! And, when it does, you'll be the first to see!! Bless! <3 p="p">

Great Savings at Kohls!

During the Black Friday rush, I finally splurged and bought myself boots, I also picked up a few other odds and ends for gifts.

In turn I received $15 in Kohl's cash. Later that week my Dad gave me a $10 kohl's purchase coupon and I also printed a 20% off coupon.

While stalking Kohl's the other day, my eye was caught on this HUGE red lantern.. (the photo on kohl's website does it no justice, it's so large in person).
The sticker price said $59.99 I scanned it; since I knew a big sale was going on. It was bumped down to $29.99. Of course my eyes lit up! Paired with my $15 Kohl's cash, the $10 off coupon AND the 20% coupon my grand total with taxes included??

A whopping $4.27 !! NO WAY?! ;)) Made my day!! Not sure what I will put in it yet, I'll stalk Pottery Barn later for inspiration. I just can't pass up a deal. Is anyone on instagram? It's my new addiction :)) - well, now that I joined the rest of the world and got a smart phone. I adore looking at everyone's vintagey edits :)

A little bit of Christmas...

To contact us Click HERE
On a whim (as in literally the last minute), I decided I would hurry and do the kids Christmas portraits the other day.  Ethan was not into it - AT ALL - but, that's okay, as many photos as I took I managed some good ones. Here are just a few.

I hate that I have to watermark everything, but twice now some one has taken my images with out my permission, and someone in Canada even mirrored my entire blog (why?).

My life is anything but interesting, but I am glad someone thinks it is :))

If you are in my area, be sure to message me about getting your holiday photos done! $50 gets you a CD FULL of images all edited with a print release. God Bless <3>

Speaking of the holidays, Christmas is in just 15 days, and I very literally didn't realize that until this very moment, (I am lying, it was more like 2 hours ago). Anyway, I just now ordered Christmas photo cards from the pro lab I use, I am only done with the kids and some of my niece's and nephew's. I would say I am super slacking this year.
I was really hoping to do some tutorials on home made Christmas gifts, like I did last year with the DIY Re purposed Barbie House Out Of Old Speakers.
And well, with 15 days, I am sure I can throw something together in the meantime.
I am not going super all out for Christmas this year to be honest. I barely decorated, I'll do crafts with the kids, possibly visit the mall Santa, and my tree is just barely put together.
I am officially the laziest parent there is this year.
There's till time to get into the mood. :)) I hope anyway.
It really has been a busy last couple of months. MiMi's artwork was selected to be in a local art gallery at the high school, she has a Christmas pageant (not beauty, more like musical of sorts, I don't know what you call them) coming up next week, etc etc.
I promise my next blog will be a DIY :))

According to an email sent to nearby residents, the restaurant will be located "at the pavilion, about where Nationwide and part of Mecklenburg Bridal was formerly located." Quail Corners is undergoing a multi-million redevelopment.

The message to neighbors also said that the shopping center broke ground on a new McDonald's, which should be open in mid to late February.

Xenia Hospitality also operates popular eateries including Nolen Kitchen, Big View Diner, and Maverick Rock Taco.

Gander Mountain to open Gastonia store

To contact us Click HERE

Firearms, hunting and outdoor supply store Gander Mountain is opening a new store in Gastonia, its sixth in North Carolina.

The store will be in the Franklin Square Shopping Center, on East Franklin Boulevard near I-85 and Cox Road. Gander Mountain said it's new store will be 43,000 square feet and will open in the late spring.

"Our newest North Carolina neighbors' passion for the outdoors and active performance living will be a perfect match with our ‘We Live Outdoors’ culture," said Gander Mountain CEO David Pratt, in a statement.

The store will carry new and used firearms, along with supplies for hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and archery, Gander Mountain said. It will also sell outdoor apparel from brands such as North Face, Under Armour, and Carhartt.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based company operates 119 stores in 24 states. In the Charlotte area, Gander Mountain has a store in Mooresville. Last year, Gander Mountain also opened new stores in Winston-Salem and Morrisville, N.C.

Note: Several months ago, a reader asked me if I knew what was going into this shopping center. Sorry the reply took so long, but here it is. Thanks, as always, for emailing me.

New Chef'Store opening in former Wal-Mart location

To contact us Click HERE

Restaurant supply company US Foods is opening its first Chef'Store in east Charlotte, a new supply store concept for restaurant operators and other  food service professionals.

There's a video tour of the new store posted to the right. The store, at 3304 Eastway Drive, is holding a grand opening Thursday morning with a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting.

The store, open to chefs and other professionals, is 30,000 square feet, with 30 employees. The Chef'Store has foods such as seafood and meat, and restaurant supplies such as cookware and knives. Products will generally be available in individual or case sizes.

“There are many busy chefs and restaurant owners in Charlotte looking for an easier, more convenient way to get the products they need at competitive prices,” said Bob Stout, US Foods' southeast region president, in a statement. “Chef’Store is bright and clean with an intuitive layout and wide aisles for fast, easy maneuvering."

The store will be open seven days a week. Building permits filed earlier this year show US Foods spent more than $2.3 million renovating and refitting its space.

Privately-held US Foods has over $20 billion in annual revenue. The company also plans to open Chef'Store locations in Oklahoma City and Columbia, S.C.

Family Dollar CEO Levine to ABC's 'Nightline'

To contact us Click HERE

Howard Levine, CEO of Matthews-based Family Dollar, was set to appear on Tuesday's edition of "Nightline," talking about the growth of dollar stores and defending the practice of importing cheap goods from overseas.

The "Nightline" story is about the rapid growth of dollar store chains, which have become a $56 billion industry. The major chains, including Dollar General and Dollar Tree, have opened thousands of new stores over the past years.

During the segment, Levine told the interviewer he doesn't mind when he - or his 7,550 stores - are called cheap.

"If somebody told me I was cheap, I would take that as a compliment," Levine said. "That means we are looking for value. That means we don't overpay for stuff."

He also defended the fact that about a third of the goods the company sells are made overseas, much of it in China, as a necessity. "Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturing has gone overseas," Levine said. "They have a cheap way of doing it and consumers accept it. There is no backlash from that so you got to go where you get the value and you got to go where you have the workmanship and the factories to do that."

So, did you see the video? What did you think?

(Editor's note: The show featuring Levine was bumped for extra coverage of a mall shooting in Oregon that happened earlier in the day).

Back at It - Harris Teeter Triple Coupons 3/26

To contact us Click HERE
The babe and I are back from Wisconsin (more on that later), just in time to catch the tail end of Triple Coupons at Harris Teeter.

When you coupon shop at the end of a big sale event, it's expected that some of the "big ticket" items will be out of stock. This was definitely true this morning, but all things considered, I'm really happy with my haul. I purchased $50 worth of groceries for less than $7, an 86% savings. Keep in mind, this is NOT my main grocery shopping trip for the week. I'll be heading out to another store, probably Aldi, to stock up on milk and produce.

Because I was "vacationing" last week, I didn't post coupon matchups for this sale, but if you're interested in shopping before it ends tomorrow evening, check out Homemaking Mom, where you will find a list of all the freebies and inexpensive items. 50% off Toys at Target

To contact us Click HERE

Toy deals abound this week at Target. Check out this previous post about Hasbro games, selling for as little as $1.00.

In addition to the Hasbro deals, Target is offering coupons for 50% off any Fisher Price, Mega Bloks, or Disney Princess toy. Check your weekly ad for the coupons, text EASTER to 827438 to have a coupon sent to your phone, or print from the Target website, found under the Easter category.
I was able to use a Fisher Price coupon and a Mega Blocks coupon to pick up inexpensive birthday and Easter basket presents for the soon to be one year old. I've got my fingers and toes crossed that N will find the remote control toy an adequate replacement for the real thing he's constantly carrying around the house.

I also picked up a Memory game. At $1.00 after coupons, I couldn't resist. I'll either keep it until N is old enough to play, donate, or gift it. I'm sure I'll find a use.

I spent just $15 on toys worth $35!
